SANIP Certificate of Stable Yard Skills – Stage One

Entrance Requirements:
The minimum age that this assessment may be taken is the year the candidate turns 16 years of age. For applicants under the age of 18, permission must be obtained and confirmed in writing by the legal guardian.
Information:
The minimum pass rate for all subjects in this module is 70%.
Candidates will be assessed orally on their safe, practical application of knowledge with explanation. Candidates are reminded that appropriate head gear must be worn when working with the horses at an assessment. Please remember to have your own string and not baling twine (plastic derivatives included), with you as required for tying up a horse using a quick release knot.

Each topic will be examined in 20 minute exam sessions.

Learning Outcome: Assessment Criteria:
The candidate should be able to: The candidate has achieved this outcome because s/he can:
Secure the horse prior to working with it in a stable. Demonstrate how to secure the horse in a stable.

Blankets:

Recognise and name various stable and outdoor blankets and be able to demonstrate methods of securing them on the horse.

Identify various stable and outdoor blankets and their methods of securing.

Safely put a blanket on a horse Demonstrate a safe technique of putting a blanket on the horse. (Compulsory)

Fit a stable / outdoor blanket.

Safely remove horse clothing.

Fit the blanket and identify any faults with the blanket.

Demonstrate removing the blanket with regard to safety and according to accepted procedure. (Compulsory)

Know the daily and annual checks to make on blankets for damage.

Know how to maintain and store blankets for future use.

Describe how to care for the blankets on a daily basis and at the end of the season.

Describe how to store blankets ready for the next season.

Boots:

Know various boots and protective leg wear for horses.

Identify various boots and protective leg wear in common use. Discuss the merits / faults of some of the selection available.

Be able to fit a variety of boots in common use.

Give reasons when they may be used.

Demonstrate how to fit various types of boots.

Describe when they may be used. (Compulsory)

Give reasons for the need to use protective leg wear. Describe the reasons for the need to use boots or any protective leg wear.
Understand why and how to care for boots Describe how to clean and care for the boots on a daily basis and annual basis. Show an understanding of the consequences of NOT maintaining a good condition of the boots.

Tie a quick release knot to secure the horse in a stable. Demonstrate how to secure the horse prior to working in a stable.

Follow safety procedures when working with and around a horse.

Can carry out a risk assessment of any given stable environment

 Demonstrate the appropriate method of handling a horse in the stable.

Enter the stable and carry out an instant risk assessment of the environment. (Compulsory)

Know the items of a simple grooming kit and their purpose.

Identify all the items of a simple grooming kit.

Describe the purpose of the individual items.

Groom the horse using a safe and efficient technique.

Inspect the horse for any external parasites / injuries and report to a higher authority

Demonstrate the sequence of grooming using a safe and effective technique.

Inspect the horse for any external parasites/injuries and describe them to the assessor. (Compulsory)

Know how to clean out the feet.

Know what to look for in respect of the condition of the feet and / or the shoes.

Report to a higher authority on what you have observed.

Demonstrate how to clean out the feet using the appropriate technique when handling the horse.

Discuss the condition of the feet / shoes with the assessor.

Evaluate if it is suitable to bathe a horse. Describe how to bathe a horse using the internationally accepted technique and use of procedure.
Know when it may not be appropriate to groom a horse. Describe when it may not be appropriate to groom a horse.
Care for the grooming kit on a daily and weekly basis.

Describe the daily care of a grooming kit.

Describe how you would maintain hygiene with this equipment on a weekly basis.

Know how to react in an emergency situation

Describe how you would react in a given emergency situation.

Know how to muck out a stable, naming the tools used. Demonstrate OR describe how to muck out a stable quickly and efficiently, naming the tools you would use.

Know how to maintain a stable yard and the surrounding areas.

Know different types of fencing in general use.

Describe the maintenance needs in and around a stable yard.

Describe the different types of fencing and the merits / or negative aspects of each one.

Know how to control pests in and around the stable yard. Describe pest control for a stable yard and immediate surrounds.  To include flies & rodents.
Know how to dispose of manure with regard to local and health regulations. Describe the disposal of manure, to include local / municipal regulations.

Know how to conduct routine checks of the horses and stable yard environment and how to rectify out-of-order situations.

Know why these checks are important.

Know the terms for undesirable behaviour.

Recognise horses’ body language and communication.

Describe the terms used for undesirable behaviour in horses, both stabled and ridden.

Describe signs of danger as shown in the horse’s expression when in the field and stable. (Compulsory)

Secure the horse prior to working with it. Demonstrate how to secure a horse

Name the parts and assemble a snaffle bridle with a martingale and noseband.

Name the parts of a saddle.

Identify, name and assemble parts of the snaffle bridle and ancillary equipment in common use including; running, standing, bib & Irish martingales; Flash, crank, dropped and cavesson nosebands.

Identify parts of the saddle.

Know various types of numnahs and materials they are made of. Identify different types of numnahs and what materials they are made of, giving reasons for some of the differences.
Know a variety of types of girths in common use. Identify a variety of girths in common use with reasons for the differences in type.
Know different types of stirrups in common use. Identify different types of stirrups and explain their fit with regard to safety of the rider.
Know different types of reins and / or their coverings. Identify different types of reins and their coverings, giving some examples of when they would be used.

Put the saddle and bridle on the horse.

To include a martingale and numnah.

Demonstrate how to tack up a horse safely and efficiently.

Recognise worn or ill-fitting saddles and equipment and the consequences of using such tack. Describe any worn or damaged tack / equipment and the dangers of using tack that is not in good repair.
